Testament of Moses VIII

VIII.1 And [another] vengeance and wrath will come upon them, such as has not been among them from the age until that time, when he will raise up for them a king of the kings of the earth, a ruler of great power, who will hang on a cross those who acknowledge circumcision. VIII.2 For he will torture those who conceal [their circumcision], and hand them over to be led bound into custody. VIII.3 And their wives will be given to gods [among] the nations. Their sons, while boys, will be cut by physicians to make them uncircumcised. VIII.4 For they will be punished among them with tortures, fire and iron, and compelled openly to carry their idols, as defiled as those who hold them. VIII.5 And those torturing them will likewise compel them to enter their hidden place. With goads they will be compelled to blaspheme the word insultingly, and last of all, after these things, the laws and what they had above their altar.

Source notes · Testament of Moses VIII

Notes from this edition, separate from the reading. Original source text is retained.

  • VIII.1: Follows Charles’s restored opening (al)te(ra); he excludes the preceding broken manuscript opening in plebem quae s..a. illis. Adopts suscitabit, potentatem and suspendet. The lost opening remains in the manuscript layer and is not claimed recoverable.
  • VIII.2: Adopts celantes for necantes; the object is supplied from the preceding circumcision clause and is bracketed. Tradidit, retained by Charles as a future-like narrative perfect, is rendered with the surrounding future in this reading layer; the exact past form remains in the manuscript layer.
  • VIII.3: Adopts Charles’s (in), omits duplicated pueri, and reads acrobistiam for acrosisam. “Make them uncircumcised” expresses inducere acrobistiam (“bring uncircumcision upon them”); this sense is editorial, not a secure reading of the corrupt manuscript word. Secabantur is normalized from past imperfect to the surrounding prediction in the reading layer.
  • VIII.4: Uses Charles’s inquinata for iniquinata. The irregular quomodo sunt pariter continentibus ea is read as comparing the idols’ defilement with that of their holders. The comparison is grammatically uncertain; the text does not independently assert that the victims carry the idols together with their holders.
  • VIII.5: Uses Charles’s transposition leges et for et leges and carries “blaspheme” into the final coordinated objects. “Hidden place” remains nonspecific; no temple identification is added.
