Testament of Moses VI

VI.1 Then ruling kings will arise for them and will be called priests of the highest God. They will act, doing impiety from the holy place of holiness. VI.2 And an insolent king [will succeed] them, who will not be of the stock of priests, a reckless and wicked man; and he will judge them as they deserve. VI.3 He [will strike down] their leading men with a sword and [destroy] their bodies in unknown places, so that no one may know where they are. VI.4 He [will kill] the elders and the young, and will not spare them. VI.5 Then fear of him will be [bitter] in their land. VI.6 And he will execute judgments upon them as the Egyptians did upon them, for thirty-four years, and [will punish] them. VI.7 And he will [bring forth] children [who succeed] him and [would rule] for shorter times. VI.8 Into their [regions] will come [cohorts] and a powerful king [of the west], [who] will conquer them. VI.9 And he [will lead] them away captive and [will burn] part of their house with fire, [and] [will crucify] some around their settlement.

Source notes · Testament of Moses VI

Notes from this edition, separate from the reading. Original source text is retained.

  • VI.1: The reader uses the predicate sense of in sacerdotes and supplies ordinary English “place.” It retains summi Dei (“of the highest God”), also printed in the critical body on n145, rather than importing the different high-priest wording proposed in the apparatus.
  • VI.2: Will succeed follows the critical edition’s future tense.
  • VI.3: Destroy and the future tense follow critical repairs; a repeated bodies phrase marked as intrusive is omitted.
  • VI.4: Will kill follows the critical edition’s future tense.
  • VI.5: Bitter replaces the manuscript’s heap according to the critical edition; among them is omitted as an editorially marked intrusion.
  • VI.6: Will punish and the form Egyptians follow the critical edition. The attachment of the thirty-four-year duration remains uncertain.
  • VI.7: Bring forth and who succeed follow Charles’s conjectural repairs of visibly damaged wording. Would rule replaces the transmitted would give. None is a certain recovery of the original text.
  • VI.8: Cohorts, regions, of the west, and who follow substantial critical conjectures; the corrupt transmitted wording remains in the alignment.
  • VI.9: The singular subject and future verbs follow the critical edition; and is editorially supplied.
