Testament of Moses V

V.1 And when the times for reproof draw near, retribution [will arise] through kings who share in crimes and punish them. V.2 And they themselves will be divided regarding the truth. V.3 Because of what happened, they will avoid righteousness and approach iniquity, and they will defile the house of their servitude [with pollutions], because they will commit fornication after foreign gods. V.4 For they will not follow the truth of God, but certain men will defile the altar with the [very] gifts they will present to the Lord, men who are not priests but slaves born of slaves. V.5 For those who are masters in those times will show regard for the persons of [the wealthy], [accept gifts], and [pervert] righteous judgments. V.6 And therefore the settlement and the [boundaries of their dwelling] will be filled with crimes and iniquities. [They will fall away from the Lord]; they will be impious judges and will judge [for silver] as each one wishes.

Source notes · Testament of Moses V

Notes from this edition, separate from the reading. Original source text is retained.

  • V.1: Will arise follows the critical edition’s future tense.
  • V.3: With pollutions follows the critical edition’s repair of the opaque word ingenationibus.
  • V.4: Very follows ipsis, the critical edition’s supplement for an edition-reported six-letter gap.
  • V.5: The wealthy, accept gifts, and pervert follow critical repairs; two phrases bracketed as intrusive in the edition are omitted from the reader layer but preserved in the manuscript alignment.
  • V.6: This verse depends heavily on the critical edition’s reconstruction of a corrupt, duplicated passage, including fall away from the Lord and for silver.
