Testament of Moses II

II.1 They will enter through you into the land which he decreed and promised to give to their fathers. II.2 In it you bless, and you will give to each one. You will establish for them an allotment in me and firmly establish their kingdom. You will leave the local authorities to them according to what will please their Lord in judgment and righteousness. II.3 But [it will happen] after they enter their land [in the sixth year]: afterward they will be ruled by princes and tyrants for eighteen years, and for nineteen years [the ten tribes will break away]. II.4 For [twelve] tribes will descend and [transfer the tent of testimony]. Then the heavenly God [will make the court] of his tent and the [tower] of his sanctuary, and two tribes of holiness will be placed there. II.5 For ten tribes will establish kingdoms for themselves according to their arrangements. II.6 And they will bring sacrificial victims for twenty years. II.7 And seven will surround the walls, and I will encircle nine [the meaning of these numbers is uncertain]. And [four will transgress] the covenant of the Lord and defile the [oath] which the Lord made with them. II.8 And they will sacrifice their children to foreign gods and place idols in the tent, serving them. II.9 And in the house of the Lord they will act wickedly, and they will carve every [likeness] of animals, many idols.

Source notes · Testament of Moses II

Notes from this edition, separate from the reading. Original source text is retained.

  • II.2: In me remains unexplained; neither Charles’s printed critical Latin nor this reader silently replaces it. Magisteria locorum is rendered “local authorities,” an interpretive equivalent of “authorities of places.”
  • II.3: The sixth year and the ten tribes breaking away follow Charles’s conjectural repairs; the sequence of eighteen and nineteen years remains uncertain.
  • II.4: Twelve tribes, the tent of testimony, the court, and the tower follow the critical edition rather than the corrupt transmitted wording.
  • II.7: The numerical sequence remains uncertain. Four, transgress, and oath follow the critical edition; the exact scan reads IV, not LV.
  • II.8: Scenae is construed as a locative dative here; the underlying form is unchanged.
  • II.9: Likeness is supplied by the critical edition to complete the grammar; no physical manuscript gap is asserted here.
