Abarbanel on Torah, Genesis Introduction 2
In the beginning, God created Man in His image on Earth, and He breathed into his nostrils a soul hewn from the bundles of life. He devised a plan to fasten upon man’s arm a link to the upper and lower realms. Perhaps man would, by his own choice, turn toward his Maker; conducting his weekday life with the sanctity of Shabbat, to understand and perceive the greatness of the Holy King. When the seekers among the generations proved unworthy in His eyes, He cast them away from Him and refined them like a smelter purifying dross — little by little, for correction — until, like the first rays of dawn, the first of His harvest appeared, truly clinging to her Beloved and delighting in the radiance of her glory, adorned with the crown she placed upon Him on His wedding day. There He gave her a precious reserved treasure, the first of its kind, together with adornments, embellishments, and ornaments, to prepare her, nourish her, according to His desire.
